I've been thinking alot recently about dnacing with animal skins. So far I own a fox skin and a coyote face skin, but of course the ultimate for me would be a wolves skin. And of course it's incredibly hard to get ahold of a wolves skin in Britain. So instead I doodled myself dancing with a wolf's skin on my back.
Okay so in reality this started as my head and just kind of randomly progressed but art history kind of encourages us to ignore artists intent and look beyond that into the unintensional input of the artist. So there ya go.
I didn't kill the wolf, and i'd rather see some productivity come out of it's death then have its skin and spirit discarded because of some weeping hearts.
When I put a skin on my body and dance with it it lives again, I help it to feel again and enable it to move and breathe once again.
I don't kid myself about what happened to the animals that died to be skinned but if they want to have the chance to stay alive and to stay and make people aware of their sorrow through seeing the shock of there corpses then I will not deny them their requests.
But be assured that if any skin ever asked me for peace I would honor that wish as well and release them in a very intregate ritual.
It doen't make up for what happened to them but it's better then brushing it all under the carpet and thinking it doesn't happen anymore because you've decided to be against it.
Holy crap... You've made this all very clear to me. I was utterly against skinning them, but, since I can't stop it...I'm going to help them dance too! If I ever come across a skin someone has just lying around, that is. -Hugs.- Yer a smart lady.
Thank you, if you want more tips and info on how to treat animals skins and about totemism in gender here's a good site- [link] and these are two great books- [link] [link]
Ah, well thats one way of looking at it, im on the fence about it all, i mean im a great nordic follower and its said they used to wear bear skins and wolf skins. Its all on the intent really, if your killing them purely for that then its bad, but if you utilise all the rest of its body then its ok =]
I like your views on this, it's ALWAYS nice when people form their own opinions instead of just going with the flow. The thought appeals to me, I never thought about it that way before
Anyway, the drawing is great, awesome work with the anatomy, nice details too!
